Tennis Elbow

Do you have tennis elbow?

Tennis elbow can be a very painful and annoying problem. The standard treatment usually involves stretching and bracing. This is usually not enough. Tennis elbow is caused by muscles on the back of the forearm becoming shorter. These are the muscles involved in the tennis back-hand. The short muscles pull on their attachment at the elbow causing chronic pain.

No, you do not have to play tennis to get tennis elbow. These muscles are also involved in holding the wrists up and moving fingers.

How does this happen?

When the involved muscles are over-used, scar tissue builds up and makes them permanently shorter. Over time, this problem tends to get progressively worse. Several activities can cause over-use of these muscles:

  • Playing tennis (the back-hand)
  • Computer keyboard use
  • Using a hammer
  • Gardening

What does Dr. Glenn Hyman do to treat tennis elbow?

Treating tennis elbow starts with examining the muscles that have become short, stiff and painful. There are often very specific regions of the muscle that have built-up scar tissue. A trained provider can feel these by hand.

I will identify the muscles involved and restore their normal state. I do this by applying gentle tension the involved muscle and combining that with specific movements. This is known as Active Release Technique® ®, which I am certified to provide.

Once the cause of the problem has been resolved, I will give you specific advice and stretches to keep it from returning.
