Low Back Pain

What's causing your low back pain?

The complex anatomy of the low back can make it difficult to get rid of low back pain. Because your low back is the link between the upper and lower body, tremendous forces are transferred through the joints, muscles, ligaments, and fascia of the low back. To complicate matters even further, discs between the bones can rupture and cause severe symptoms.

The most important step in treating low back pain is figuring out which tissues are causing it. After an accurate diagnosis is made, we can help you, or tell you who besides us will be able to help you.

Most of the patients who come to this office have low back pain that originates either in the low back muscles (there are a lot of them) and/or the ligaments that hold the bones together. These cases respond very well to Active Release Technique®.

How do the muscles and ligaments become painful?

Many factors can combine to cause low back pain, this is a very small portion of that list:

  • Sitting for a long time
  • Lifting things incorrectly (without bending the knees)
  • Not moving around enough
  • Physical work
  • Bending or twisting in an awkward position
  • Having weak stomach muscles and tight hamstrings

How does Dr. Glenn treat low back pain?

First I identify the muscles in your low back that have become short, stiff and painful. I use a unique treatment method, called Active Release Technique® ® to release these muscles and restore their normal function. It's a hands-on, scientific approach to treating conditions like low back pain, headaches, and carpal tunnel syndrome, to name a few. If the joints in your low back are stiff and contributing to the problem, they may be adjusted. Adjustments are a gentle way to loosen joints. Very little force is used with adjustments and they usually feel great.

Once you are feeling better, I will give you specific stretches and advice to keep your low back pain from returning. It is important to keep the hamstrings flexible and keep the abdominals strong. You will be taught how to do this.

Generally speaking, you should notice improvement within the first four treatments. If you are not feeling any better after 4 treatments, a medical referral may be appropriate for your case.
