All of these may be related to imbalances in the adrenal hormonal system. The adrenal glands make cortisol and DHEA, two hormones that are crucial to your health and well being. These hormones help are central to your body’s ability to respond to and recover from stress. Cortisol is a catabolic hormone that breaks down tissue and mobilizes energy in your body to respond to stress. It’s often called your body’s main stress-response hormone. DHEA is cortisol’s counterpart. It’s involved in repair and recovery so you can meet the next demands of the next bout of stress. This system is ancient and evolved when humans faced two main sources of stress – lack of food, and danger from large predators. These stresses were often followed by long periods of recovery. Today however, we face chronic stresses that don’t relent, and this can easily overwhelm the adrenal system. Common sources of stress can overwhelm your body and cause disruption in your cortisol / DHEA levels. These stressors include overworking, financial problems, injuries, illness, and over exercising. In addition to these stresses, lifestyle stressors include eating processed foods, skipping meals, using too much caffeine, taking prescription medications, and poor sleep habits. The daily cortisol rhythmYour cortisol levels should follow a predictable pattern within a specific ideal range throughout the day. Your cortisol levels should peak when you wake up and slowly decline throughout the day.
An overwhelmed and over-stressed adrenal system responds in a predictable way. First, cortisol levels rise higher than the ideal range. This is sometimes referred to as Stage 1 adrenal burnout. Some of the symptoms can include difficulty losing fat, fatigue, and trouble sleeping.
As the process continues, DHEA levels may drop, and then cortisol levels may drop below the ideal range. This is called Stage 2 Adrenal Burnout. Accompanying symptoms may include more severe fatigue, moodiness, food cravings, and insomnia.
The good news is that this process can be disrupted and reversed. The first step is evaluating your adrenal hormonal system with a simple saliva-based lab test called the Functional Adrenal Stress Profile. We provide you with the lab kit and complete it at home by providing 4 saliva samples collected throughout a single day. The kit is then sent to the lab and the results come back to our office. Using your results and the detailed health and lifestyle history, we work together to create a healing program. Treatment programs vary based on each patient’s unique situation, but each program reduces or removes sources of stress so the adrenal system can rebalance itself. Our Natural Treatment Programs support a healthy adrenal system with:
